Sharer Solar Australia: Programs Explained, Costs, and Pros & Cons

Sharer Solar Australia

12/03/2026

Sharer Solar in Australia is built around the idea of giving households around three hours of free electricity in the middle of the day, starting with a federal Solar Sharer Offer in NSW, South Australia, and south-east Queensland from July 2026, with a possible national rollout later.

Even before that scheme begins, some retailers already offer “free-hours” or solar share–style plans that reward you for using more power when the sun is strongest. This article breaks down what Sharer Solar Australia includes, how these programs work, what they really cost, and the key pros and cons to keep in mind.

What Is “Sharer Solar” in Australia?

In this context, Sharer Solar covers two closely related ideas. First, there’s the federal Solar Sharer Offer – a regulated scheme that will require retailers in DMO states (NSW, South Australia, and south-east Queensland) to give eligible households at least three hours of free electricity around midday each day from 1 July 2026.

To access it, you’ll need a smart meter and you’ll have to opt in to the specific Solar Sharer plan your retailer offers. The aim is to soak up excess daytime solar, ease pressure on the grid during the evening peak, and let people without rooftop panels share more of the benefits of renewables.

Second, there are retailer-designed solar share–style plans. These are time-of-use offers that already exist in several states and give you free or very cheap power in a daytime window, often between 10am–2pm or 11am–2pm.

They’re built on the same logic as Solar Sharer: encourage households to use more power when it’s sunny and wholesale prices are low or even negative. So when we talk about “Sharer Solar Australia”, we’re really talking about these midday free-hours schemes – some created by the government, others created by energy retailers.

Pros: Why Sharer Solar Australia Can Be a Win

If your household is a good fit, Sharer Solar can deliver a mix of bill savings, fairer access to solar, and extra rewards for homes with the right tech.

1. Access to solar benefits without panels

You can get cheaper or free midday power even if you can’t put panels on your roof – you just need a smart meter and the right plan.

2. Lower bills in the right circumstances

Used well, free or off-peak daytime power can noticeably reduce your overall bill compared with a flat-rate plan.

3. Better for the grid and the environment

Shifting demand into the solar-rich part of the day helps:

  • Reduce curtailment and waste of surplus solar
  • Ease pressure at the evening peak
  • Support a smoother transition to higher levels of renewables

4. Extra upside for battery owners

Plans like ZEROHERO add multiple revenue streams (free grid charging, daily credits, premium evening feed-in, VPP payments) on top of normal bill savings.

Cons and Limitations: When Sharer Solar Australia Might Not Help

Sharer Solar isn’t a magic discount for everyone.

1. You may pay more at other times

Because retailers are giving you $0/kWh power for several hours a day, they often set higher tariffs in the morning and evening to recover costs.

If you can’t shift usage, you may:

  • Use very little in the free window
  • Still pay high peak rates in the evening
  • End up with little saving or even a higher bill

2. Requires a smart meter and some tech comfort

You generally need a smart meter, and it helps if you’re comfortable:

  • Using timer functions on appliances
  • Managing a battery app or portal
  • Reading time-of-use charts on your bill or online

3. Availability is staggered

The Solar Sharer Offer starts only in NSW, SA, and south-east QLD from July 2026, with other states potentially added by 2027. But plans like GloBird’s FOUR4FREE and ZEROHERO may be available at your location.

4. Complexity vs simplicity

If you like set-and-forget flat-rate plans and don’t want to think about when you use power, a Sharer Solar plan may feel like too much work for marginal gain.

Conclusion

Sharer Solar Australia is a real shift towards plans that reward you for using more electricity when the sun is out and less when the grid is strained.

It can be a smart move if:

  • You have a smart meter
  • You’re able to shift a decent chunk of usage into the free or off-peak window
  • You’re willing to keep an eye on your bills and tweak your habits

If you’re curious what this could look like for your home, it’s worth checking the fact sheets for GloBird’s FOUR4FREE and ZEROHERO plans and comparing them with your latest bill. That way, you can see whether a Sharer Solar-style program fits your routine, your budget, and how you actually use power day to day.
